History

Founding the club

On November 16th, 1994, in the club room of Restaurant Zapata, Matti Paavola, Maili Suonperä (LC Hyvinkää/Höffinga), Marja-Liisa Takala, Anu Panschin, Marju Handolin, Anja Laine, Leena Sariola, Virpi Söderholm, Anja Malminen, Liisa Orsila, Päivi Laaksonen (now Salonen), Vuokko Niiranen (now Uimonen) and Helena Rahko met to lay the foundations for the first womens' club in Järvenpää. The founding meeting was held on 8th February, 1995. LC Hyvinkää/Höffinga was chosen as the god club and Lions Paula Pylvänäinen and Maili Suonperä as godparents. Marja-Leena Kulmala of LC Tuusula/Hyrylä was invited to become guide lion. We wanted a name associated with the community. 'Aino', the name of the wife of our famous composer Jean Sibelius, also associated with Ainola, seemed like a natural choice. LC Järvenpää/Ainot was the 29th womens' club in Finland and 10th in our C-area. Vuokko Uimonen served as Charter President. The Charter celebration was held on 27th May, 1995, with 21 founding members attending.

Flag and table pennant

In spring 1999 club members began planning the flag. The different designs were voted on and the winner was ”the fluttery headbands of the Ainos”, which turned out to be too expensive to implement in full color. ”Footprint of an Aino lion” by lion Maija Vitikainen, which finished second, was implemented by PDG Simo Waltenberg. Lion Maija had wanted a real lioness' footprint for her proposal. Her contact in Africa wrote as follows:

Again, this morning, it is hot and humid; same as all other mornings in Zimbabwe, at the Victoria Falls. - There they are again – the lions. I may get a good print, as that female in her prime is walking over freshly raked dirt. Voilà; a touch of paw for the Aino flag.

A picture of the fresh paw print was faxed to Maija, who went on to describe the message of the Aino flag as follows: ”Wherever we tread and impact, we shall leave a tender touch. A touch not without emotion, but a touch neither without determination. The Aino-lion's touch of paw leaves a soft trace within our fellow travelers, in their souls and in their bodies. It is not demanding, but offering, inquiring, with a delicate approach.”

The magnificent ”Footprint of an Aino lion” was published and celebrated on 5th January, 2000, and inaugurated at the 5-year anniversary Charter celebration on 5th February, 2000.

The table pennant with the same motif was published in spring 2002.
