The Association of Finnish Lions Clubs supports Haiti

On 20th January 2010 the Association of Finnish Lions Clubs has decided to transfer 40 000 euros from its disaster fund to the repair and reconstruction of damages caused by the natural disaster in Haiti. The donation is a part of the international Lions organization’s help package. To date, lions clubs and partners around the world have donated in all 350 000 dollars.
Furthermore, necessities chosen with the help of the local knowledge of other Caribbean countries’ lions have been sent. Lions from Sweden have sent large accommodation tents and Canadian lions have set up a medical station.
There are ca 950 lions clubs in Finland which have started a disaster fundraising to get additional help. Donations can be made through local lions clubs.
The International Lions Organization directs the donations without deductions to disaster help.
The Finnish Lions Clubs’ donations to date are ca 107 000 euros.

SKEBA – Youth Band Competition

A good start for SKEBA Within the time limit, over 60 bands have entered the national Youth Band Competition SKEBA that is organized by the Association of Finnish Lions Clubs.
Tryouts are organized until the end of April all over the country and the finale will be a public event with an entrance fee in Hämeenlinna, in Verkatehdas Vanaja-Hall on 11th June 2010 at 18 o’clock.
One of the aims of the Youth Band Competition is to promote youths’ musical hobbies. At the same time, we can help diversify and raise the level of youths’ taste in music. Every participant receives constructive feedback and performing experience.
With the help of this competition we wish to emphasize collaboration amongst youths, appreciation of everyone’s individual talent, striving towards goals and positive encouragement for starting a good hobby.

An International Lions Event in Tampere

The Europa Forum organized in Tampere between 17th – 19th September 2009 gathered lions together. Over 1 100 lions and spouses from over 40 countries gathered at Tampere Hall. Present was also the highest management of the international lions organization. A long-standing supporter of Lionism, Nobel-prized president Martti Ahtisaari was the main speaker at the Europa Forum opening ceremony.
Europa Forum is the biggest international lions meeting annually organized in Europe. It has been almost 30 years since the last Europa Forum organized in Finland.
Europa Forum is a meeting event for European lions where experiences are exchanged and collaboration is developed. During the Forum dozens of collaboration meetings and seminars were held.
The main topic of the forum in Tampere was the Lions brand renewal and the interaction between generations. This formed the forum's theme: Connecting Generations.
The President of the International Lions Organization, Eberhard J. Wirfs, described the Forum in Tampere as very successful.

A Contribution for the Construction of the Sight First Eye Hospital in Sri Lanka

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has granted The Association of Finnish Lions Clubs 505 500 euros in support for the eye hospital project in Ratnapura for the period of 2009 – 2011. This sum also adds to Finland’s CSF II result with the same amount. Consequently, our Campaign SightFirst II donation funds are ca 3 million USD.

Child Sponsorship

Lions in Finland and Sri Lanka have worked together since 1986 helping impoverished children with their education. During these past years over 1 700 children have gotten their own Finnish sponsors. The sponsors are lions clubs, lions clubs’ ladies as well as individual lions and their spouses. There are also many people outside the Lions organization like families and work groups. New sponsors are constantly needed; please acquaint yourself with the activity.
